INFORMATION ABOUT THE DESTINATION

If someone were to make a checklist of every possible attraction and activity that would make the ideal Caribbean getaway island, they would find that St. Martin/St. Maarten already has every attribute they could desire. Beautiful scenery, friendly local people, year-round tropical climate, fantastic beaches, exciting nightlife, world-class shopping, gourmet dining, abundant watersports and a unique island culture would all be on that list; and the list would go on.

The island is unique in that it boasts two countries on one island. Saint Martin, as the French side is spelled, belongs to France; and Sint Maarten is part of the Netherlands Antilles. In addition to Caribbean culture, visitors are treated to two distinct official languages, currencies and lifestyles. The French side is like a piece of the French Riviera transported to an island. Marigot, the capital of the French side, offers chic boutiques with the latest Paris fashions, charming cafes, top gourmet restaurants, great night-life and great people-watching.

The 38 beaches of St. Martin/St. Maarten are world famous for their beautiful white sand and turquoise water. Each beach is unique, and all beaches are open to the public. Coral reefs populated by colorful marine life fringe the coast, and several tiny islets with lovely beaches are just a short distance away. St. Martin is only a quick flight away from the islands of Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Barths, and Anguilla; enabling visitors to sample a wide variety of beaches and surroundings.

Plenty of activities are found on St. Martin. Shopping is considered a serious sport, and there are many interesting art galleries and historical sites to explore. Watersports ranging from scuba diving to parasailing are available, and an assortment of boats can be chartered either for fishing or a day cruise. At night, the pace picks up in the discotheques all over the island and in the casinos on the Dutch side.
